Making pot holders can be a fun and useful sewing project. Here's a simple guide to creating pot holder patterns:
Contents
Materials Needed:
- Measuring tape
- Paper (or cardstock) for creating your pattern
- Pencil or pen
- Ruler or straight edge
- Fabric for the outer layer (such as cotton)
- Insulated batting or heat-resistant fabric for the inner layer
- Binding or bias tape
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Iron and ironing board
Steps:
1. Measure and Determine Size:
- Decide on the size of your pot holder. A common size is around 8 inches by 8 inches, but you can adjust according to your preference.
- Add seam allowances to your measurements (usually around ½ inch to 1 inch).
2. Create the Pattern:
- Using your measurements, draw a square on your paper representing the size of your pot holder.
- Round the corners slightly to create a more pleasing shape and to prevent them from being caught on anything.
- This square will serve as your pot holder pattern piece.
3. Cut Out Fabric:
- Using your pattern piece, cut two squares from your outer fabric and two squares from your insulated batting or heat-resistant fabric.
4. Layer Fabric:
- Place one square of outer fabric right side up on your work surface.
- Layer one square of insulated batting on top of the outer fabric.
- Place the second square of outer fabric right side down on top of the batting.
- Pin the layers together around the edges to hold them in place.
5. Sew Around the Edges:
- Sew around the edges of the layered squares, leaving a small opening (about 2-3 inches) along one side for turning.
6. Clip Corners and Turn:
- Clip the corners diagonally, being careful not to cut into the stitching.
- Turn the pot holder right side out through the opening.
7. Press:
- Use an iron to press the pot holder, pressing the seams flat and folding in the raw edges of the opening.
8. Topstitch:
- Topstitch around the edges of the pot holder, closing the opening as you sew.
9. Quilting (Optional):
- If desired, you can quilt the layers together by sewing lines or a pattern across the pot holder.
10. Add Binding:
- Cut strips of binding or bias tape to fit around the edges of the pot holder.
- Attach the binding to the edges, folding it over to encase the raw edges.
- Sew the binding in place, making sure to catch both the front and back of the pot holder.
11. Finish:
- Trim any excess binding and threads.
- Your pot holder is now ready to use!
Feel free to experiment with different fabrics, shapes, and quilting designs to personalize your pot holders. They also make great gifts for friends and family!
