Creating a sewing pattern involves a series of measurements and steps to draft the pattern pieces. Below is a simple guide to help you make a basic pajama pants sewing pattern. Keep in mind that this pattern assumes a relatively loose fit. Adjustments may be needed based on personal preferences and body measurements.
Materials:
- Large sheets of paper (pattern paper or old newspapers)
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Measuring tape
- Fabric of your choice
- Elastic for the waistband
Instructions:
Step 1: Take Measurements
- Waist: Measure the circumference of your natural waistline.
- Hip: Measure the fullest part of your hip.
- Inseam: Measure the inside of your leg from crotch to ankle.
- Outseam: Measure from your natural waistline to the desired length of the pants.
Step 2: Drafting the Pattern
- Front Panel:
- Draw a rectangle on the paper.
- The width of the rectangle is half of your hip measurement plus ease for comfort.
- The length is the outseam measurement.
- Back Panel:
- Similar to the front panel, draw another rectangle.
- The width is the same as the front panel.
- The length should be the same as the front panel.
- Crotch Curve:
- Connect the top corners of the front and back panels with a curved line to create the crotch curve. This curve should dip down in the middle.
- Inseam:
- Extend lines down from the bottom corners of the front and back panels to create the inseam.
- Waistband:
- For the waistband, draw a rectangle with a length equal to your waist measurement plus a few inches for overlap.
- The width should be enough to fold over and create a casing for the elastic.
Step 3: Cutting and Sewing
- Cut out the pattern pieces, adding seam allowances (usually 1/2 inch) along the edges.
- Place the front and back panels right sides together and sew along the inseam and crotch curve.
- Attach the waistband by folding it in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sewing it to the top of the pants.
- Insert elastic into the waistband casing and secure the ends.
- Fold and hem the bottom of the pants to the desired length.
- Try on the pants and make any necessary adjustments.
- Finish by pressing seams and hems.
Remember, this is a basic guide, and you may need to make adjustments based on your body shape and personal preferences. It's also a good idea to make a mock-up using inexpensive fabric before cutting into your final material.
