Creating a sewing pattern for a kimono robe is a wonderful project for those with intermediate sewing skills. Kimono robes are comfortable and can be made in various lengths and fabric choices. Here's a basic guide on how to create a sewing pattern for a kimono robe:
Materials and Tools:
- Fabric (silk, satin, cotton, or any lightweight woven fabric)
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Straight pins
- Safety pins
- Iron and ironing board
- Pattern paper or large sheets of paper
Instructions:
- Take Measurements:
- Measure your bust, waist, hips, and the desired length for your kimono robe.
- Add ease to these measurements for comfort. Typically, add 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) to your bust and hip measurements.
- Create the Pattern for the Kimono Robe:
- Fold your pattern paper or large sheets of paper in half.
- On the folded edge, mark a point for the top corner (shoulder) of your kimono robe. Measure down from this point to mark the length measurement you desire for your robe.
- From the shoulder point, measure out to the side to mark half of your bust measurement + ease. Draw a straight line from this point to the bottom edge (hem) of your robe pattern.
- To create the sleeve, measure down from the shoulder point about 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) for a standard kimono sleeve. Draw a curved line connecting the sleeve point to the side seam of the robe.
- For the neckline, measure down from the shoulder point about 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) and draw a gentle curve connecting it to the center front of the robe.
- Cut along these lines, and you've created half of your kimono robe pattern.
- Add seam allowances (typically 1/2 inch or 1.27 cm) to all edges except the neckline, which should have a larger seam allowance (1 inch or 2.54 cm) to create the facing.
- Cut Out Fabric:
- Fold your fabric in half, right sides facing each other.
- Pin the pattern piece to the fabric and cut around it, adding the necessary seam allowances.
- Cut a second piece for the back of the robe.
- Sew the Kimono Robe:
- With right sides facing, sew the shoulder and side seams of the robe using a straight stitch. Leave the sleeve and hem edges open.
- Finish the seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or serger to prevent fraying.
- Turn the robe right side out.
- Create the Neckline Facing:
- Fold the neckline edge of the robe fabric twice to create a facing for the neckline. Pin in place.
- Sew along the lower edge of the facing, leaving a small opening to insert a tie or ribbon for closure.
- Hem the Kimono Robe:
- Fold the sleeve and bottom hem edges of the robe twice to create neat hems. Pin in place.
- Sew the hems in place.
- Finish the Kimono Robe:
- Press the robe with an iron to remove any wrinkles and create crisp seams.
- Add Closure (Optional):
- Insert a tie or ribbon through the neckline facing to create a closure. You can also add a belt or sash to cinch the waist.
Now, your kimono robe is ready to wear. Customize it by choosing different fabrics, adding pockets, or embellishing as desired.
