Creating a pillowcase sewing pattern is a simple and rewarding project. You can follow these steps to make a standard pillowcase pattern for a rectangular pillow:
Materials and Tools:
- Fabric (cotton, flannel, or your preferred material)
- Scissors
- Sewing machine (or you can hand sew)
- Thread
- Pins
- Measuring tape or ruler
Step 1: Measure your pillow
Measure the length and width of your pillow. Standard pillow sizes are typically around 20 x 26 inches for a standard/queen pillow and 20 x 36 inches for a king-size pillow. Make sure to add an extra inch to both the length and width for seam allowances. For a standard pillow, your fabric piece should be 21 x 27 inches.
Step 2: Cut the fabric
Using your measurements, cut two pieces of fabric, each measuring 21 x 27 inches. These will be the front and back pieces of your pillowcase.
Step 3: Fold the fabric
Place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other with the right sides facing in. In sewing, the "right side" is the side with the pattern or the side you want to show on the outside of your finished pillowcase. Pin the fabric together along the three open sides (not the fold).
Step 4: Sew the fabric
Using a straight stitch, sew along the pinned sides, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Start at one corner, sew along the long side, pivot at the corner, sew along the short side, pivot again, and sew along the other long side. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seams.
Step 5: Clip the corners
Trim the excess fabric at the corners to reduce bulk when you turn the pillowcase right side out. Be careful not to cut into your stitches.
Step 6: Turn the pillowcase right side out
Reach inside the open end of the pillowcase and pull the fabric through to turn it right side out. Use a blunt tool, like a chopstick or a corner turner, to gently push out the corners for a crisp look.
Step 7: Press and finish
Give your pillowcase a good press with an iron to smooth out any wrinkles and create clean seams. Make sure the corners are nicely defined. You can also fold in the raw edges at the open end (about 1/4 inch) and press them in place. Pin the open end shut.
Step 8: Sew the open end
Sew the open end shut with a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the seam. This will create a neat, finished edge.
Your pillowcase is now complete. It's a basic pattern, and you can embellish it with additional details like decorative trims, embroidery, or fabric paint to make it uniquely your own. Enjoy your newly created pillowcase!
