Creating a duffle bag for kids involves designing a pattern with smaller dimensions and ensuring that the construction is simple enough for young sewers. Here's a basic pattern for a kid-sized duffle bag:
Materials:
- 1 yard of sturdy fabric (canvas or a durable cotton)
- 1 yard of lining fabric (can be a lightweight cotton)
- 2 yards of nylon webbing or fabric for the straps
- Coordinating thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
Duffle Bag Measurements:
- Main Body (MB):
- Cut two rectangles measuring 14 inches (width) by 18 inches (height).
- Bottom Panel (BP):
- Cut one rectangle measuring 14 inches (width) by 8 inches (height).
- Zipper Tabs (ZT):
- Cut two squares measuring 2 inches by 2 inches.
- Straps (ST):
- Cut two pieces of nylon webbing or fabric measuring 24 inches each.
Sewing Instructions:
- Attach Zipper:
- Place the zipper face down on the top edge of one Main Body piece (MB).
- Lay the other Main Body piece on top, right sides facing.
- Sew along the top edge, attaching the zipper.
- Add Bottom Panel:
- Align the Bottom Panel (BP) with the bottom edge of the Main Body piece with the zipper, right sides facing.
- Sew along the bottom edge.
- Create Zipper Tabs:
- Fold each Zipper Tab (ZT) in half, right sides facing, and sew along the two open sides.
- Turn the tabs right side out.
- Attach one Zipper Tab to each end of the zipper, folding the tab over the seam and stitching it in place.
- Construct Bag Body:
- Open the zipper partially.
- Fold the bag along the zipper, right sides facing, aligning the edges.
- Sew the side seams.
- Attach Straps:
- Fold each end of the Straps (ST) under by 1 inch and stitch to secure.
- Position the straps on the sides of the bag and sew in place.
- Create Lining:
- Repeat steps 1-4 using the lining fabric to create a lining for the bag.
- Assemble the Duffle Bag:
- Turn the outer bag right side out.
- Slip the lining inside the outer bag, aligning the top edges.
- Sew around the top edge, leaving a small opening for turning.
- Turn the bag right side out through the opening.
- Stitch the opening closed.
- Finishing Touches:
- Press the bag to ensure crisp seams.
- Optionally, add any embellishments or decorations.
This kid-sized duffle bag pattern is suitable for beginners and can be customized with different fabrics and colors to suit a child's preferences.
