Creating a sewing pattern for an apron involves a few steps. Here's a simple pattern for a basic apron with a bib, waist ties, and a pocket:
Materials Needed:
- Fabric (yardage will depend on your size and desired length)
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Pins
- Measuring tape
- Fabric marker or chalk
Apron Pattern Instructions:
Step 1: Take Measurements
- Measure around your waist where you want the apron to sit. Add about 6-8 inches to this measurement for the waist tie.
- Measure from your waist to your desired length for the apron.
- Measure the width of your chest for the bib width.
- Decide on the width and length of the pocket.
Step 2: Drafting the Pattern
- Apron Body:
- Fold your fabric in half horizontally.
- Using your waist to length measurement, mark and cut out a rectangle from the folded edge. This will be the main body of your apron. Make sure it's wide enough to cover your front adequately.
- Bib:
- From the remaining fabric, mark and cut out a rectangle for the bib. The width should be slightly wider than your chest width, and the length should be about 10-12 inches.
- Round off the corners of one of the shorter edges to create a curve for the neck.
- Waist Ties:
- Cut two long strips of fabric, each as long as your waist measurement plus the desired tie length. The width should be about 4-6 inches.
- Pocket:
- Cut a rectangle for the pocket according to your desired dimensions.
Step 3: Assembly
- Attach the Bib:
- Place the bib on top of the apron body, aligning the top edges.
- Sew along the top edge to attach the bib to the apron.
- Pocket:
- Fold and press the edges of the pocket to create a clean hem.
- Place the pocket on the apron body, positioning it where you want.
- Sew around the sides and bottom of the pocket, leaving the top open.
- Waist Ties:
- Fold each waist tie strip in half lengthwise with right sides together, then sew along the long edge, leaving one end open.
- Turn the ties right side out and press them flat.
- Attach one end of each tie to the sides of the apron body, near the top edge, and sew securely.
- Finish the Apron:
- Fold and press the side edges of the apron body to create a clean hem.
- Sew along the side edges to finish the hem.
Step 4: Final Touches
- Press the entire apron to give it a polished look.
- Optionally, you can add decorative elements like trim or embroidery.
That's it! Your basic apron pattern is ready to use. Adjustments can be made to suit your preferences or add more features like additional pockets or ruffles for decoration.
