Creating a beach bag is a fun and practical sewing project. Below is a simple beach bag sewing pattern to get you started. Please note that the dimensions and measurements can be adjusted to suit your preferences.
Materials you'll need:
- 1 yard of sturdy cotton or canvas fabric for the bag's exterior
- 1 yard of coordinating cotton or canvas fabric for the bag's lining
- 1 yard of fusible interfacing (optional, for added sturdiness)
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Iron
- Pins
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the fabric Wash, dry, and iron your fabric before starting to remove any sizing or wrinkles.
Step 2: Cut the fabric Cut the following pieces from both the exterior and lining fabric:
- Main panel: 18 inches wide by 24 inches tall (You'll need 2 of these for the front and back of the bag).
- Side panels: 6 inches wide by 24 inches tall (You'll need 2 of these).
- Bottom panel: 6 inches wide by 18 inches long (You'll need 1 of these).
- Straps: 4 inches wide by 22 inches long (You'll need 2 of these).
Optional: Cut the same pieces from the fusible interfacing for added stability.
Step 3: Attach interfacing (optional) If using fusible interfacing, iron it onto the wrong side of the main panel, side panels, and bottom panel of the bag's exterior fabric following the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 4: Prepare the straps Take one strap piece and fold it in half lengthwise with right sides facing each other. Sew along the long edge using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving the ends open. Turn the strap right side out, press it flat with the seam at the center, and topstitch along both edges. Repeat for the second strap.
Step 5: Assemble the bag Place one side panel on top of the main panel (exterior fabric), right sides facing each other. Pin along the 18-inch edge and sew using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Repeat this step to attach the other side panel to the opposite side of the main panel.
Next, attach the bottom panel to the assembled front and back panels. Place the bottom panel right sides together with the side panels, aligning the edges. Pin and sew along the edges using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Repeat the same steps with the lining fabric, but this time, leave a 4-inch gap along the bottom edge for turning the bag right side out later.
Step 6: Box the corners To create depth for the bag, box the corners on both the exterior and lining fabric. Pinch each bottom corner of the bag, bringing the side seam and bottom seam together, forming a triangle. Measure and mark 3 inches from the tip of the triangle and draw a straight line perpendicular to the seams. Sew along this line and trim the excess fabric. Repeat for all four corners.
Step 7: Attach the straps Position the straps on the bag's exterior, about 4 inches from each side seam, with the raw edges aligned with the top edge of the bag. Make sure the straps are facing down toward the bottom of the bag. Pin them in place and sew them securely onto the bag with an "X" pattern for added strength.
Step 8: Assemble the bag Turn the lining right side out and place it inside the exterior of the bag, with right sides facing each other. Match the top edges and side seams and pin them together. Sew around the top edge of the bag using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving the 4-inch gap in the lining open.
Step 9: Finish the bag Pull the bag through the gap in the lining, turning it right side out. Press the top edge and the lining's gap. Then, hand-sew the opening in the lining closed.
Finally, press the bag, and you're done!
Now you have a stylish and functional beach bag to carry all your essentials for a day of fun in the sun!
