Creating a basic stockings pattern involves a few simple steps. Below is a guide to help you make a pattern for thigh-high stockings. Keep in mind that you can adjust the measurements based on your size and preferences.
Materials:
- Large sheets of paper or pattern paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Measuring tape
- Stretchy fabric (such as jersey, lycra, or spandex)
- Sewing machine
- Elastic
Instructions:
- Measurements:
- Measure the circumference of your thigh at the widest part.
- Measure the length from your upper thigh to just above your knee or desired length.
- Create the Pattern:
- On your pattern paper, draw a vertical line equal to the measured length from your upper thigh to above the knee.
- At the top of the line, mark half of the thigh circumference and draw a horizontal line.
- At the bottom of the line, mark half of the knee circumference and draw another horizontal line.
- Connect the lines to form a tapered shape, wider at the thigh and narrower at the knee.
- Add Seam Allowance:
- Add a 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) seam allowance around the pattern. This is the space where you will sew the stockings together.
- Cut Out the Pattern:
- Cut out the pattern, and make sure to label it as the main stocking piece.
- Cut Fabric:
- Pin the pattern to your stretchy fabric and cut out two pieces for each leg.
- Sew the Stockings:
- Place the fabric pieces right sides together and sew along the back seam (the long edge), using a stretch stitch if available.
- Turn the stockings right side out.
- Attach Elastic:
- Measure a piece of elastic slightly shorter than the top circumference of your stockings.
- Fold over the top edge of each stocking and insert the elastic inside.
- Stretch the elastic as you sew it in place, ensuring a snug fit around your thigh.
- Finish:
- Hem the bottom of the stockings by folding the fabric over and sewing in place.
- Optionally, you can add a small piece of elastic at the bottom to help keep the stockings in place.
- Optional: Add a Garter Belt:
- If you want to make thigh-high stockings with a garter belt, you can create additional straps and attach them to the stockings.
Remember to try on the stockings as you go to ensure a good fit. Feel free to customize the pattern based on your style and preferences. Additionally, consider using a serger or a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine to accommodate the stretchiness of the fabric.
