Creating a sewing caddy for an armchair is a convenient project to keep your sewing essentials within arm's reach. Here's a simple pattern to make an armchair sewing caddy.

Materials:

  • Fabric of your choice (quilting cotton or canvas works well)
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Optional: Fusible interfacing for added structure

Instructions:

  1. Measurements:
    • Measure the arm of your chair where you want to hang the caddy. Note the width and length available.
  2. Cutting the Fabric:
    • Cut two rectangular pieces of fabric for the body of the caddy. The dimensions should be as follows:
      • Width: Armchair width + 2 inches (for seam allowances)
      • Length: Desired length of the caddy + 2 inches (for seam allowances)
    • If you want extra structure, cut a piece of fusible interfacing to the same size.
  3. Pockets:
    • Cut additional rectangular pieces of fabric for the pockets. The number and size of pockets are up to you, but you might consider having different-sized pockets for various sewing tools.
    • Hem the top edge of each pocket by folding it down about 1/2 inch, then sew it in place.
    • Place and pin the pockets on one of the body fabric pieces. Make sure to leave enough space between them for your sewing tools.
  4. Sewing the Pockets:
    • Sew along the sides and bottom of each pocket, securing them to the fabric. Backstitch at the top edge for added durability.
  5. Assembly:
    • Place the fabric piece with the pockets right side up on top of the other body fabric piece, aligning the edges.
    • If you're using interfacing, place it on top of the bottom fabric piece.
    • Pin the layers together.
  6. Sew the Sides:
    • Sew along the sides of the fabric pieces, leaving the top open. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
    • If you're using interfacing, make sure to sew through all the layers.
  7. Trim Corners:
    • Trim the corners diagonally to reduce bulk.
  8. Turn and Press:
    • Turn the caddy right side out.
    • Press the seams and edges to make the caddy lay flat.
  9. Optional Strap:
    • You can add a strap to secure the caddy around the chair arm. Cut a strip of fabric, fold it in half lengthwise, sew it with the right sides together, and turn it right side out. Attach it to the top of the caddy on the inside edge.
  10. Hanging the Caddy:
    • Hang the caddy over the arm of your chair and fill the pockets with your sewing tools.
