Creating a sewing pattern for a duffle bag is a fun and rewarding project. Duffle bags are versatile and can be customized in various ways to suit your style and needs. Here's a basic sewing pattern for a simple duffle bag. You can adjust the dimensions and add pockets, zippers, or other features to customize it further.
Materials:
- Fabric for the outer shell (canvas, denim, or any sturdy fabric)
- Fabric for the lining (cotton or a coordinating fabric)
- Fusible interfacing (optional, for added structure)
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
- Drawstring cord or fabric for handles
- Eyelets (optional, for the drawstring opening)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare Your Materials
- Choose your fabrics. You'll need a piece for the outer shell, a piece for the lining, and possibly a piece for interfacing if you want added structure.
- Determine the dimensions of your duffle bag. For a basic design, you can start with a rectangle that measures approximately 24 inches by 12 inches. Adjust the dimensions as needed.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
- Cut two identical rectangles from the outer fabric, two from the lining fabric, and two from the interfacing (if using). The dimensions should match what you decided in Step 1.
- If you want to add pockets, cut them from the outer fabric or lining fabric as desired and stitch them onto one of the outer fabric pieces.
Step 3: Attach Interfacing (Optional)
- Iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of one of the outer fabric pieces following the manufacturer's instructions. This will provide added structure to your duffle bag.
Step 4: Sew the Outer Shell
- Place the two outer fabric pieces with right sides together and sew around three sides, leaving the top (the shorter side) open.
- If you want rounded corners, trim the corners and turn the bag right side out.
Step 5: Sew the Lining
- Place the two lining fabric pieces right sides together and sew around three sides, leaving a small opening (about 4 inches) at the bottom for turning the bag later.
- If you want to add pockets to the lining, do so before sewing the pieces together.
Step 6: Attach the Drawstring Opening (Optional)
- Create a drawstring opening at the top of the outer shell by folding the top edge down about an inch and sewing it in place. If you prefer, you can attach eyelets on both sides of the opening for added strength and to allow the drawstring to pass through.
Step 7: Assemble the Bag
- Place the outer shell inside the lining with right sides together. Align the top edges, including the drawstring opening if you added one.
- Sew around the top edge, attaching the outer shell to the lining. Be sure to leave a small opening for turning the bag.
Step 8: Turn the Bag
- Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining.
- Hand-stitch the lining's opening closed.
Step 9: Add Handles
- Create handles from fabric or use pre-made webbing or cord. Attach the handles to the sides of the duffle bag, making sure they're secure.
Step 10: Finish the Bag
- Your duffle bag is now complete. You can add a drawstring cord through the opening, and you're ready to use it!
Feel free to customize your duffle bag further by adding pockets, zippers, or other features to make it uniquely yours.
