A bowl cozy is a handy item to protect your hands from hot bowls in the microwave. Here's a simple sewing pattern to create a bowl cozy:
Materials Needed:
- Cotton fabric (100% cotton is best)
- Insulated batting (such as Insul-Bright)
- Coordinating thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Pins
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Iron and ironing board
- Marking pen or chalk
Pattern:
- Measure the bowl: Measure the diameter of the bowl you want the cozy for, as well as the height from the table to the rim. Add an extra 2 inches (5 cm) to the diameter measurement for seam allowances.
- Cut the fabric: Cut two squares from your cotton fabric and two squares from the insulated batting using the measurements from step 1.
- Layer the materials: Place one piece of cotton fabric right side down, then layer one piece of insulated batting on top. Repeat with the second set of fabric and batting.
- Pin the layers: Pin the layers together to keep them in place.
- Sew around the edges: Using a 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) seam allowance, sew around the edges of each set, leaving a 3-inch (7.5 cm) opening on one side for turning.
- Clip the corners: Trim the corners diagonally to reduce bulk and help the corners lay flat when turned right side out.
- Turn it right side out: Carefully turn each cozy right side out through the opening. Use a chopstick or the blunt end of a pencil to push out the corners.

- Topstitch: Sew around the entire edge of the cozie, about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) from the edge. This will close the opening and provide a finished look.
- Quilt or stitch the layers: To keep the insulated batting in place and enhance insulation, you can stitch some lines or quilt your cozie. This can be done by stitching through all layers.
