Creating a balaclava pattern for a child is a simple sewing project. Here's a basic pattern and sewing instructions to make a kid's balaclava:
Materials Needed:
- Stretchy fabric (fleece, jersey knit, or a blend) - 1/4 yard should be sufficient for a child's balaclava.
- Sewing machine or hand-sewing needle
- Matching thread
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Straight pins
- Elastic cord (optional)
Balaclava Pattern:
- Measure your child's head circumference. This measurement will be the circumference of the opening for the face.
- Determine the length you want for the balaclava, keeping in mind that it needs to cover the neck and part of the chest.
- Create a rectangular pattern piece using these measurements. The width should be the head circumference plus a little extra for seam allowance (usually 1/2 inch), and the length should be the desired length of the balaclava plus a few inches for comfort. For example, if the head circumference is 20 inches and you want a 12-inch long balaclava, your rectangle might be around 20.5 inches wide by 14 inches long.
Sewing Steps:
- Fold the fabric in half with the right sides facing each other.
- Place your pattern on top of the folded fabric and pin it in place.
- Cut out the fabric following the pattern. You will end up with two identical pieces.
- Unpin the pieces and place them right sides together.
If you want to add a face opening:
- Mark the center of one of the shorter sides of the fabric pieces.
- Measure and mark the center of the width of the fabric.
- Using a round object like a cup or a lid, trace a curved shape for the face opening. Start and end the curve at the center marks you made. Ensure it's large enough for your child's face but not too large that it won't stay snug.
If you don't want a face opening, simply sew the two pieces together around the top, sides, and back, leaving the bottom open.
For both versions:
- Sew along the curved line if you added a face opening or along the top, sides, and back if you didn't. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance.
- Trim any excess fabric and clip the curved seam allowance if needed to help it lie flat.
- Turn the balaclava right side out.
- If desired, you can add elastic cord to the bottom edge to help it stay in place. Thread the cord through the bottom edge, tie the ends, and hide the knots inside the fabric.
- Try the balaclava on your child to ensure a good fit.
Your kid's balaclava is now ready to keep them warm during cold weather activities. Customize it with colors and patterns your child loves. Make sure to supervise children while they are wearing balaclavas to ensure they can breathe comfortably and safely.
