Creating a makeup bag can be a fun and practical sewing project. Here's a simple step-by-step sewing pattern to make a basic makeup bag with a zipper closure:
Materials you'll need:
- Outer fabric (cotton, canvas, or any fabric of your choice)
- Lining fabric (cotton or a lightweight fabric)
- Zipper (at least 8 inches long)
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Fabric
- Cut two rectangular pieces from your outer fabric and two from your lining fabric, each measuring 9 inches by 7 inches.
Step 2: Sew the Zipper
- Place one lining piece right side up on your working surface.
- Lay the zipper, teeth side down, along the top edge of the lining fabric.
- Place one outer fabric piece right side down on top of the zipper, aligning the top edges.
- Pin the layers together.
- Using a zipper foot on your sewing machine, sew along the top edge, about ¼ inch from the edge. Make sure you sew through the fabric and the zipper tape.
- Repeat the above steps for the other side of the zipper, using the remaining outer and lining pieces.
Step 3: Attach the Lining and Outer Fabric
- Unzip the zipper halfway.
- Fold the fabric so that the outer pieces are right sides together and the lining pieces are right sides together.
- Pin the outer pieces together and the lining pieces together, leaving a small opening (about 3 inches) in the lining fabric for turning the bag right side out later.
- Sew around the three sides of the bag, starting and stopping at the pins, using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Reinforce the stitches at the beginning and end.
- Clip the corners to reduce bulk.
Step 4: Box the Corners
- To create a boxy shape at the bottom of the bag, gently pull apart the corners, aligning the side seam with the bottom seam.
- Measure 1.5 inches from the point of the corner and mark a line perpendicular to the seam.
- Sew along this line and repeat for the other corner on both the lining and the outer fabric.
Step 5: Finish the Bag
- Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining.
- Push out the corners to make them nice and sharp.
- Hand-stitch the opening in the lining closed using a slip stitch or ladder stitch.
- Press the bag with an iron to give it a polished look.
Your makeup bag is now complete! You can customize it by using different fabrics, adding pockets inside, or embellishing it with embroidery or appliqué. Enjoy your new handmade makeup bag!
