Creating an Advent calendar is a fun sewing project, and you can customize it with your own choice of fabrics and decorations. Here's a basic sewing pattern to make a simple fabric Advent calendar with pockets for each day leading up to Christmas.
Materials:
- Various fabrics for the background and pockets
- Felt or fabric for numbers and decorations
- Scissors
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Ribbon or dowel for hanging
- Iron and ironing board
- Fabric glue (optional)
- Buttons, beads, or other embellishments (optional)
Instructions:
- Design and Cut the Background:
Decide on the size of your Advent calendar. A common size is about 18 inches by 24 inches (45 cm by 60 cm). Cut your main background fabric to this size. This will serve as the base of your calendar.
- Cut and Arrange the Pockets:
Cut 24 rectangles from your pocket fabric, each measuring about 3 inches by 4 inches (7.5 cm by 10 cm). Arrange them on the background fabric in a grid pattern, leaving some space between them for seam allowances. You can have multiple rows of pockets if needed.
- Sew the Pockets:
Sew around the edges of each pocket, leaving the top edge open. This will create individual pockets for each day.
- Cut and Attach the Numbers:
Cut numbers 1 to 24 from felt or another fabric of your choice. You can hand-sew or use fabric glue to attach each number to the corresponding pocket.
- Decorate the Calendar:
Use felt or fabric scraps to create decorative elements like a Christmas tree, snowflakes, or stars. Attach these to the background fabric using fabric glue or by sewing them in place.
- Add Embellishments (optional):
You can further decorate your Advent calendar with buttons, beads, or any other embellishments that suit your style.
- Create a Hanging Sleeve:
At the top of the background fabric, fold over about 1 inch (2.5 cm) to the backside and sew it down to create a sleeve. Insert a ribbon or dowel through this sleeve for hanging.
- Finish the Back:
If you want to hide any visible seams or stitches on the back, you can cut a piece of fabric of the same size as the calendar and sew it to the back, enclosing all raw edges.
- Hang and Fill the Pockets:
Hang your Advent calendar on a wall or door. Fill each pocket with small treats, notes, or small gifts for each day leading up to Christmas.
- Enjoy the Countdown:
Starting on December 1st, open one pocket each day until Christmas. It's a fun way to count down to the holiday!
Feel free to customize the design, size, and decorations to fit your preferences and home decor. Advent calendars can be a wonderful family tradition and a beautiful addition to your holiday decorations.
