Creating a pleated skirt sewing pattern involves a few steps. Here's a simple pattern for a basic pleated skirt. Please note that measurements may need to be adjusted based on individual preferences and body measurements.
Materials:
- Fabric (amount depends on your measurements and desired skirt length)
- Waistband elastic (about 1 inch or 2.5 cm wide)
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine or needle
- Pins
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
Instructions:
1. Take Measurements:
Measure your waist and decide on the desired length of your skirt. Also, measure the desired width of each pleat. Common pleat sizes are around 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) each.
2. Create the Pattern:
a. Front and Back Panels:
- The front and back panels will be rectangles. The width of each panel is your waist measurement plus seam allowance, and the length is your desired skirt length plus hem allowance.
- For example, if your waist is 28 inches and you want a finished length of 20 inches, your front and back panel rectangles would be 29 inches (28 inches + 1 inch for seam allowance) wide and 21 inches (20 inches + 1 inch for hem allowance) long.
b. Pleats:
- Decide how many pleats you want on the front and back panels. Divide the total number of pleats by 2 for each panel.
- For each pleat, you'll need three times the pleat width in total. For example, if your pleats are 1.5 inches wide, each pleat will require 4.5 inches of fabric.
- Mark the pleat locations on your front and back panels evenly. To create the pleats, fold the fabric towards the center of each pleat, creating a pleat that is 1.5 inches wide. Pin in place.
3. Cut Fabric:
Cut the fabric using the patterns you created, including the pleats.
4. Sew Pleats:
Sew down the top of each pleat to secure it in place, making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each pleat.
5. Assemble the Skirt:
a. Sew Side Seams:
- With right sides facing, sew the side seams of the front and back panels, creating a tube.
b. Attach Waistband:
- Cut a piece of waistband elastic to your waist measurement. Overlap the ends slightly and sew them together to form a circle.
- Pin the waistband to the top of the skirt, distributing the gathers evenly.
6. Finish the Skirt:
a. Hem the Skirt:
- Fold the bottom edge of the skirt up by 1 inch and press. Then fold it up again by 1 inch and press. Sew along the folded edge to hem the skirt.
b. Secure Waistband:
- Sew the waistband to the top of the skirt, stretching the elastic slightly as you go to create a snug fit.
Your pleated skirt is now complete! Feel free to customize it with different fabrics, lengths, or pleat styles to suit your preferences.
