Making a mini backpack can be a fun sewing project, and it's a great way to create a cute accessory for everyday use or as a gift. Here's a simple mini backpack sewing pattern and instructions to get you started:

Materials you'll need:

  • Fabric of your choice for the exterior (cotton, canvas, or faux leather).
  • Fabric for the lining (cotton or polyester).
  • Lightweight interfacing (optional, for added structure).
  • Zipper (around 6-8 inches long).
  • Two D-rings or rectangle rings.
  • Two swivel clips or lobster clasps.
  • Matching thread.
  • Sewing machine.
  • Scissors.
  • Ruler or measuring tape.
  • Iron and ironing board.

Mini Backpack Pattern and Instructions:

  1. Prepare the pattern: Create a pattern for your mini backpack by drawing a rectangle for the main body (around 8 inches wide and 10 inches tall) and a smaller rectangle for the front pocket (around 8 inches wide and 5 inches tall). Add ½ inch seam allowance to all sides.
  2. Cut the fabric: Use the pattern to cut two main body pieces (one from the exterior fabric and one from the lining fabric) and two front pocket pieces (one from the exterior fabric and one from the lining fabric). If using interfacing, cut two main body pieces from it as well.
  3. Add interfacing (optional): If you want your mini backpack to have more structure, iron the lightweight interfacing onto the wrong side of both main body pieces following the manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Sew the front pocket: Place the front pocket pieces right sides together (one from the exterior fabric and one from the lining fabric). Sew around the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Turn it right side out and press.
  5. Attach the front pocket to the main body: Align the bottom edge of the front pocket with the bottom edge of one main body piece (exterior fabric). Sew along the sides and bottom to attach the pocket to the main body.
  6. Add zipper: Place the main body pieces (exterior fabric and lining fabric) right sides together, sandwiching the front pocket and zipper in between along the top edge. Sew along the top to attach the pieces and create the backpack's opening. Flip the pieces right side out and topstitch along the edge to secure the zipper.
  7. Create the straps: Cut two long strips of fabric (around 1.5 inches wide and 25 inches long) for the straps. Fold each strip in half lengthwise with the right sides together, and sew along the long edge. Turn them right side out, press, and topstitch along the edges.
  8. Attach the straps: On the backside of the backpack, position one end of each strap about 1-2 inches from the top edge and pin in place. Attach D-rings or rectangle rings to the other ends of the straps. Stitch the straps securely to the backpack.
  9. Add the closure: On the top back of the backpack, attach the swivel clips or lobster clasps. These will serve as the closure for the backpack.
  10. Complete the backpack: Place the exterior main body and lining pieces right sides together. Sew along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Turn the backpack right side out through the opening. Press the seams and topstitch along the top edge to close the opening.
